California drivers with qualifying zero-emission or low-emission vehicles can now rejoice! The California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has launched a new online application system for Clean Air Vehicle (CAV) decals, offering a faster and more convenient way to obtain this coveted permit.
Benefits of the New Online System:
- Faster Service: No more waiting in line or mailing applications! Apply for your CAV decal electronically and receive it sooner.
- Convenience: Skip the paper application and postage fees. Simply visit dmv.ca.gov to complete the process from the comfort of your home.
- Instant Eligibility Check: The online system verifies your vehicle's eligibility immediately, eliminating any uncertainty.
Why Get a CAV Decal?
A CAV decal allows single-occupant vehicles with qualifying clean emissions to utilize High Occupancy Vehicle (HOV) lanes, also known as carpool lanes. This benefit can significantly reduce commute times in congested areas.
How to Apply for a CAV Decal Online
Simply visit the California DMV website at https://www.dmv.ca.gov/portal/ and follow the prompts for the online CAV decal application.
Benefits of Having a CAV Decal
A CAV decal allows you to enjoy the following benefits:
- HOV Lane Access: Drive solo in carpool lanes (also known as High Occupancy Vehicle or HOV lanes) that typically require multiple occupants per vehicle.
- Reduced Emissions: Contribute to cleaner air in California by driving a zero-emission or low-emission vehicle.
Who Qualifies for a CAV Decal?
- Vehicles that meet California's super ultra-low emission vehicle (SULEV), inherently low-emission vehicle (ILEV), or transitional zero emission vehicle (TZEV) standards.
- Compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) fueled vehicles may also qualify.
Current CAV Decal Information:
- The current HOV lane access with CAV decals is valid until September 30, 2025, subject to extension by Congress.
- As of now, over 411,000 vehicles in California sport active CAV decals.
- The program issues red, green, and yellow decals based on vehicle emission standards. These decals expire on September 30, 2025.
- Compressed natural gas (CNG) and liquefied petroleum gas (LPG) vehicles may also be eligible for the CAV program.
- Blue decals issued in 2021 have a separate expiration date of January 1, 2025.
- All decals issued before 2021 are no longer valid.
