Modified Schedule to Improve Efficiency and Community Service

Sacramento, CA – In an effort to enhance efficiency and better serve the evolving needs of its customers, the California Department of Motor Vehicles (DMV) has announced a modification in public hours for 20 of its offices across the state. Starting July 1, these offices will remain open to the public two to three days a week.

On the weekdays when these offices are closed to the public, DMV team members will focus on processing transactions that were initiated online and require additional processing or virtual customer interaction. This initiative is part of DMV's broader digital transformation strategy aimed at improving overall efficiency and reducing processing times for all customers by handling more tasks online.

New Office Hours and Digital Transformation

As part of its ongoing digital transformation, the DMV is offering numerous online and alternative options to complete various tasks, eliminating the need for most in-office visits. Transactions that do not necessitate an office visit can be conveniently started or completed online at dmv.ca.gov/online.

DMV Director Steve Gordon emphasized the department's commitment to customer convenience, stating, "We are committed to providing services to customers when and where they want. As a mobile-first organization, we are serving Californians through many channels on any device while at the same time still serving customers who must visit an office."

Why the Change?

The DMV is undergoing a digital transformation to provide Californians with more convenient service options. They've already made most transactions available online, eliminating unnecessary office visits.

DMV Director Steve Gordon emphasizes their commitment to customer convenience: "We are a mobile-first organization, serving Californians through many channels on any device, while still catering to customers who require in-office assistance."

How They Determined the Changes:

The DMV carefully reviewed factors like transaction volume, staffing levels, and wait times at all their offices before implementing the modified schedule. This ensures they can meet the in-person needs of each community.

What This Means for You:

  • Minimal Impact on Wait Times: The DMV anticipates minimal impact on overall wait times, thanks to the efficient use of staff time.

  • Focus on Virtual Office Tasks: On closed days, staff will handle "Virtual Office" tasks, further streamlining the process.

Offices with Modified Service Hours

To determine which offices would transition to a modified schedule, the DMV reviewed transaction volumes, staffing, wait times, and other criteria across its 170 statewide offices. The selected offices will continue to meet the in-office needs of their communities with minimal impact on overall wait times. During the days these offices are closed to the public, staff will work on Virtual Office items.
